The Charism of Carmel includes a sound Marian spirituality that is centered and rooted in Christ. Mary is intimately united with the life and redemptive work of her Son. She formed us in Christ, and through her mediation of grace, she promotes our transformation into Christ. Through her “Fiat” Mary is the perfect model of an availability that springs from faith, and a perfect example of the religious attitudes we strive to live. (rule pp 28, 29)

Our Marian devotion is expressed in various forms of our daily prayer, especially the Rosary, which enhances our Christ centered life in its Christological character, by contemplating the mysteries of Christ’s life through the eyes and heart of Mary. In addition to the Rosary, our Marian prayers include the Angelus, Litany of the Blessed Virgin. Faithful to our Carmel heritage, we begin the day with the Gregorian chant Salve Regina, or the Regina Caeli during the Easter Season.

By her example, the Blessed Virgin teaches us to be involved with people and to be attentive to their needs. This teaching is imprinted in the heart of every Carmelite Sister of the Divine Heart of Jesus by our Mother Foundress’ motto “See God in all, Serve God in all, Love God in all”.

The habit we wear is another symbol of our Marian devotion represented by the Brown Scapular of our Lady of Mount Carmel, a sign of consecration to our Lady and her way of life. It represents our belief in Mary’s motherly protection, our confidence in her intercession, and prayers before our Triune God.

Simply put, Marian is Prayer to the Virgin Mary. It pertains to the Charism of Carmel to live a sound Marian piety and spirituality.
